About Fluorite
Fluorite comes from the Latin word "fluor", which means "to flow". The stone was given this unique name due to its ability to shine under UV light; it is often described as crystal fluorescence. Fluorite comes in a range of delicate designs that are symmetrical, beautiful and many believe to have spiritual qualities. The stone is associated with beauty, lucid dreaming and improving an individual's intelligence, among other things.
Fluorite has a so-called cubic crystal system. The calcium ions occupy face-centered positions; the fluoride ions are located in the tetrahedra between four calcium ions. The octahedral spaces between calcium ions are unoccupied in fluorite. In its pure form, fluorite is colorless, but due to trace elements (transition metals) it can have different colors.
There are the following colors of fluorite:
- Black
- Blue
- Green
- Magenta
- Rainbow
- Pink
- Purple
- Yellow
- Red (very rare)
The colors can also occur in varying degrees of darkness and intensity. To test whether your fluorite is fluorescent, you can expose the crystal to ultraviolet light.
